July 2023. Mauritania will receive 767,000 dollars from the African Development Fund, on concessional terms from the African Development Bank Group, to develop livestock farming, the country’s second largest employment-generating sector. The agreement opens the way to the launching by the Mauritanian government of the Program for the valorization of the natural agro-pastoral potential of the Saharan zone – project for the inclusive development of the breeding farms (AWKAR project). This project aims to develop the agro-pastoral resources available in the north-eastern part (Dahr) of the Hodh Chargui region. The objective is to provide a solution to the multidimensional problems and limitations of the agro-pastoral sector and to open perspectives for more structural projects and programs in the livestock sector in order to develop the available agro-pastoral resources.
